This carefully crafted 10-day expedition takes you on an unforgettable journey through Colombia’s most dramatic ecological transition: from the misty cloud forests of the Western Andes, through vibrant tropical dry forests and wetlands, down into the pristine rainforests of the Amazon basin.
Starting in the Pacific-slope forests near Cali, home to endemic species found nowhere else on Earth, we’ll traverse multiple life zones, each with its own unique bird communities. You’ll search for the spectacular Toucan Barbet in mountain forests, explore wetlands teeming with waterbirds, and culminate your journey in the Amazon, where primate encounters complement exceptional birding.

What to bring

- Sturdy, comfortable walking shoes (trails can be muddy)
- Layered clothing: mornings are cool in mountains (bring fleece/light jacket); hot in Amazon

- Insect repellent, especially important for Amazon section
- Headlamp or flashlight: useful for early starts and evening wildlife

Is this tour suitable for beginners?
Absolutely. While the species list includes many advanced targets, I’m equally comfortable guiding first-time birders. I’ll help with binocular use, identification techniques, and understanding what we’re observing. The journey itself—watching ecosystems change—is fascinating regardless of experience level.
How much time do we spend in vehicles?
Travel days (Days 2, 3, 4, 6, 8) involve 2-4 hours of driving, but we make birding stops along the way when opportunities arise. Intensive birding days (Days 1, 5, 7, 9) are primarily on foot with minimal driving. The vehicles are comfortable, and we take breaks as needed.
Is the Amazon section hot and buggy?
Yes, the Amazon (Days 8-9) is tropical—warm (25-32°C) and humid with insects present. However, we provide insect repellent recommendations, schedule birding during cooler morning/evening hours, and choose accommodations with fans/AC. Most participants find it perfectly manageable with appropriate preparation.
Are the endemic species sightings reliable?
What if it rains?
Rain is part of birding in Colombia, especially in cloud forests and the Amazon. Light rain doesn’t stop us, birds are often more active, and we’re prepared with rain gear. Heavy rain can reduce visibility and activity, so we’ll adjust the daily schedule (earlier starts, different trails) or shift activities as needed. We’re flexible and work with the weather, not against it.
What about food, will it be safe and accommodating?
Is Colombia safe for this type of travel?
Yes. The regions we visit are safe and regularly traveled by international birders and tourists. I know these areas intimately and maintain communication with local contacts. Your safety is my top priority, and I’ve guided hundreds of international visitors through these regions without incident.
Can this tour be customized?
