Witness Colombia's Unparalleled Biodiversity From Mountains to Rainforest

This carefully crafted 10-day expedition takes you on an unforgettable journey through Colombia’s most dramatic ecological transition: from the misty cloud forests of the Western Andes, through vibrant tropical dry forests and wetlands, down into the pristine rainforests of the Amazon basin.

Starting in the Pacific-slope forests near Cali, home to endemic species found nowhere else on Earth, we’ll traverse multiple life zones, each with its own unique bird communities. You’ll search for the spectacular Toucan Barbet in mountain forests, explore wetlands teeming with waterbirds, and culminate your journey in the Amazon, where primate encounters complement exceptional birding.

This isn’t a rushed checklist tour. It’s a thoughtfully paced journey that allows you to absorb the changing landscapes, understand the ecological relationships between habitats, and witness firsthand why Colombia holds the world’s highest bird diversity. Each day builds upon the last, creating a narrative of biodiversity that few places on Earth can match.

With comfortable accommodations, and manageable daily schedules, you’ll experience Colombia’s wild heart in a way that’s both adventurous and comfortable.

Why this tour

A story of biodiversity

This isn't a random collection of birding locations—it's a carefully designed narrative that tells the story of Colombian biodiversity. By following the ecological gradient from Pacific-slope mountains to Amazon rainforest, you'll understand why Colombia holds the world record for bird diversity.

Conservation connection

Many locations we visit are family-owned reserves or community-based conservation projects. Your participation directly supports these initiatives, helping protect the habitats that make this journey possible. Some of these sites exist because local families and communities recognized the value of their forests and chose conservation over exploitation. Visiting these places validates their choice and provides economic support for continued protection.

Beyond Birding

While birds are our primary focus, this journey offers so much more: colonial architecture in Popayan, local cuisine throughout the regions, primate encounters in the Amazon, and the chance to experience Colombia's warmth and hospitality in remote areas where few international visitors venture.

Frequently asked questions

Is this tour suitable for beginners?

Absolutely. While the species list includes many advanced targets, I’m equally comfortable guiding first-time birders. I’ll help with binocular use, identification techniques, and understanding what we’re observing. The journey itself—watching ecosystems change—is fascinating regardless of experience level.

Travel days (Days 2, 3, 4, 6, 8) involve 2-4 hours of driving, but we make birding stops along the way when opportunities arise. Intensive birding days (Days 1, 5, 7, 9) are primarily on foot with minimal driving. The vehicles are comfortable, and we take breaks as needed.

Yes, the Amazon (Days 8-9) is tropical—warm (25-32°C) and humid with insects present. However, we provide insect repellent recommendations, schedule birding during cooler morning/evening hours, and choose accommodations with fans/AC. Most participants find it perfectly manageable with appropriate preparation.

No birding is ever 100% guaranteed, but this itinerary is designed around locations where target species are consistently present. Sites like El Encanto Nature Reserve and Doña Dora have excellent track records for their specialty species. Weather and seasonal movements can affect encounters, but success rates are high.

Rain is part of birding in Colombia, especially in cloud forests and the Amazon. Light rain doesn’t stop us, birds are often more active, and we’re prepared with rain gear. Heavy rain can reduce visibility and activity, so we’ll adjust the daily schedule (earlier starts, different trails) or shift activities as needed. We’re flexible and work with the weather, not against it.

All meals are at established restaurants and lodges with good hygiene standards. Water is always safe (bottled or purified). I’m experienced working with international travelers and dietary requirements: vegetarian, vegan, allergies, and preferences can all be accommodated with advance notice.

Yes. The regions we visit are safe and regularly traveled by international birders and tourists. I know these areas intimately and maintain communication with local contacts. Your safety is my top priority, and I’ve guided hundreds of international visitors through these regions without incident.

Yes, within reason. If you have specific targets, want to spend extra time in certain ecosystems, or need to adjust the pace, let me know when booking and we’ll discuss possibilities. The core itinerary is optimized for diversity and bird encounters, but some flexibility exists.

Yes! If you want to add days in specific regions, visit other Colombian birding hotspots, or extend your time in Bogotá, I can help arrange additional birding or recommend local guides for other regions.
