This 10-day journey moves through the Western and Central Andes, the part of Colombia with the highest concentration of endemic birds. Starting in Medellín and working south through cloud forests, mountain reserves, and highland páramo, we follow the elevation gradients where these species actually live.

Colombia has more endemic bird species than any other country, and this route is designed around the best places to find them. Yellow-eared Parrots at Alto de Ventanas. Antpittas coming to feeders at Río Blanco. The Buffy Helmetcrest in the páramo. The Andean Cock-of-the-Rock at one of the most reliable leks in the country.

400+ species are possible over ten days, including 30-35 endemics. The lodges are comfortable, the pace is unhurried, and the people who protect these reserves have stories worth hearing.

What to bring

Essential:
  • Sturdy, comfortable walking shoes: trails can be muddy, especially in cloud forest
  • Layered clothing: temperatures range from cold páramo (0-10°C) to warm valleys (20-25°C)
  • Warm jacket/fleece: essential for high-altitude days
  • Rain gear: waterproof jacket essential; rain pants recommended
  • Water bottle: refillable (safe water provided)
  • Sun protection: hat, sunscreen, sunglasses (high-altitude sun is intense)
  • Binoculars: I can provide if needed
  • Headlamp: useful for early starts
Optional but recommended:
  • Camera with telephoto lens: exceptional photo opportunities throughout
  • Field guide: “Birds of Colombia” or regional guides
  • Small backpack: for daily essentials
  • Insect repellent: not critical but useful

Special Considerations: The páramo days (Days 7-8) require warm clothing—temperatures can be near freezing in early morning. Bring layers you can add/remove as we move through elevations.

Antpitta feeders & reliable locations

We visit the country's best antpitta feeding stations, where species come to feed. These shy, secretive birds are normally glimpsed briefly in dense undergrowth. Here, you'll watch them at close range, observe their behavior, and get photographs that would be nearly impossible elsewhere.

Small groups, personal attention

With a maximum of four people, everyone gets good views, we can move quietly through habitats, and I can adapt to the group's interests and pace. Whether you're photographing, listing, or simply enjoying the experience, small group size makes everything better.

Is this tour suitable for beginners?
This itinerary is built around species that reward patience and knowledge. Experienced birders will find the endemic targets, the antpitta feeders, and the páramo days particularly rewarding. If you’re newer to birding, the locations are exceptional regardless of experience level, and I’ll help you get the most out of every encounter. The pace works for both.
Nothing in birding is guaranteed, but this itinerary is built around locations where endemics are consistently present. Yellow-eared Parrots are highly reliable at Alto de Ventanas. The Río Blanco antpitta feeders have exceptional success rates. Buffy Helmetcrest is found reliably in the páramo. Weather and bird behavior can affect encounters, but the locations are chosen for reliability.
Most people tolerate the altitudes well. We spend most of the tour between 1,800-3,000 meters, which rarely causes problems. The páramo days reach 4,200 meters, which can affect some people. We’ll take breaks, move at a comfortable pace, and I’ll monitor everyone’s well-being. If you have altitude sensitivity or medical concerns, mention it when booking.
Most trails are moderate, established paths through reserves, not strenuous hikes. We might walk 3-5 kilometers in a day, but at a birding pace (slow, with frequent stops). The terrain can be uneven and muddy, so good footwear is important. If mobility is a concern, let me know and we can discuss modifications.
Cloud forest birding involves rain, it’s part of the ecosystem. Light rain doesn’t stop us; birds are often more active, and we’re prepared with rain gear. Heavy rain can reduce visibility and bird activity, so we’ll adjust timing or shift to different areas if needed. We work with weather, not against it.

Absolutely. The feeders offer exceptional photo opportunities: birds at close range, good light, predictable behavior. I’ll position you appropriately and allow time for photography. Many participants come specifically for the photo opportunities.

The areas we visit are safe and regularly traveled by international birders. I know these regions well and maintain local contacts throughout the route. The coffee region is particularly welcoming to visitors, and I’ve guided groups here for years without incident. Your safety is my top priority.
